Bolsonaro taken into custody after being considered a risk of fleeing

Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which encompassed plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The conspiracy was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, many Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.

The security forces took action and around fifteen hundred individuals were arrested.
