An individual profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of American actions.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a blockchain-based service, that the leader would be no longer in control by the close of the month surged in the time leading up to Donald Trump declared on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.
One account, which joined the platform recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.
It remains unclear. The user had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Platform data shows that users put the odds of a political change at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
However the odds had climbed to over 10% by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the first hours of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a transaction based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other individuals also earned large payouts from similar wagers.
Elected officials are growing concerned.
Proposed legislation introduced on recently would prevent government employees from making trades on prediction markets if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.
Prediction markets have surged in popularity in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from sports to political events.
This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the current presidency.
Insider trading is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting industry.
An official representative for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
